Tips Before Heading to SXSW

So SXSW is just around the corner and in preparation for the event, Mashable posted a few popular questions and answers for those of you who may be preparing for their first SXSW. So we picked a few of our favorite questions to share with you.

1)   What’s The Dress Code Like?

The atmosphere is casual, according to Mashable, much like a startup office. Make sure you wear comfy shoes and be prepared for a hot week since Austin is typically warm during this time of year. However it is also advised that bring a couple of nice changes of clothes, in case you are invited to any private dinners at nice restaurants.

2)   What’s the Best Way to Get Around?

It is recommended that you don’t rent a car while you are there. Downtown Austin is very small and easy to walk arounf. If you’re staying outside of downtown there are shuttles that can take you into the city. There are also numerous pedicabs that work of tips if you get tired of wlaking or need to get somewhere faster. If you rent a car you’ll have to deal with the hassle of traffice and the expense. It’s not worth it.

3)   What Should I Do?

There will definitely be a lot going on at SXSW so make sure you have a plan. You won’t be able to see everything, so focus on what you know for sure you want to see. Mashable advises that it’s more important to network with interesting people, than it is to spread yourself too thin. You don’t want to sacrifice face-to-face time with people in exchange for waiting in lines.

4)   What’s The Most Effective Giveaway?

According to the Mashable article, there really is no one effective giveaway. Sometimes people just like t-shirts or stickers. Many people believe that giveaways don’t actually have much of an impact all together. So if you’re going to give something away, don’t spend too much time worrying over it. Instead focus on how you present yourself and your startup.

5)   How Do I Deal With Competition at SXSW?

Again, this too can serve as another distraction. Focus on yourself and what you are bringing to SXSW. Don’t get caught up in who will be there. The point is to network and get your name out there.
