Tell us a little about yourself:
I’m a 2010 graduate of Hampton University, with a BA in Journalism & Communications. Born in Minneapolis, MN, I lived in upstate New York for a couple of years before moving to the Houston area in the 2nd grade. I’m the eldest of two children… (I have an 18 year old brother) and I am all about faith, family and friends!
How did you get started in the social media field?
I studied all facets of journalism and communications while in school. I think that it was this immersive style of learning that really got me interested in social media, because it was one of the things I really excelled at. After school, I found so many opportunities to hone my skills, as social media is a newer concept that not all people fully grasp the power of.
What is your favorite thing about social media?
The coolest thing about social media is that it’s always evolving. There’s always some new platform, or some new way to manage what we already have. No two days are the same. Also, one of the great things about social media is that it’s given people unprecedented access to information. There’s nothing that I need to know that I can’t find on some social network.
What life event or accomplishment to date are you most proud of?
I’m sure there are others, but college graduation sticks out most in my mind. I worked really hard, graduated on time, and in the top 10% of my class.
What are you most looking forward to in 2013?
I’m looking forward to really growing and improving both professionally and personally. I’ll be 25 years old in September, so this is a landmark year for me. I’m looking forward to everything 2013 has to offer!
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I like to read, watch Scandal on ABC, watch independent films and try new restaurants. Most of my free time however, I dedicate to writing my entertainment news blog, TheUptownLounge.com. I started it in college and since then, its given me the opportunity to go to major award shows, festivals and concerts as an independent correspondent. It’s love it like it’s my child.
Who is your role model/inspiration?
I have several, but I’d have to say my parents are great inspirations to me. They’ve set the standard for me in my personal life, taught me the importance of being both strong in faith and character. They’ve loved me unconditionally, and that’s helped me to become the person I am today. My professional inspiration is Oprah, because, who doesn’t want to be like Oprah? I think her story is one that really makes you believe that you can do and be the best, no matter how your story starts, if you work hard and believe in yourself.
Describe yourself in four words:
Bright, Witty, Innovative, Conscientious
What is something you would like people to know about you?
I like to listen more than I like to talk. That may seem surprising but I’m really inquisitive, and you learn more when listening. That being said, I do love to talk, especially about music, sports (Go Texans), entertainment and politics. I like watching random choreography videos on YouTube, and trying out the moves (privately.)
What’s on your desk?
- A mug full of organic chai tea.
- My ancient BlackBerry that I can’t seem to break away from.
- A metal desk organizer, with Pens, hot pink post-it’s, car keys and a black zebra print notebook.
- My iPad, and a stick of Burt’s Bees Nourishing lip balm with mango butter.
