While I may be running off to Austin to celebrate the 4th of July holiday, on a big fat party boat, most of my holiday memories were born right here at home, in Houston. Leading up to this 4th of July, I’m feeling more sentimental than usual and want to share the treats, toys and events around town that have always made my celebration, with family or friends, well, sparkle. More often than not, my interactions with sparklers these days are confined to the plethora of wedding receptions I’ve attended. Growing up, however, sparklers were the main attraction to any 4th of July celebration in our family.
While the season may not be in full force at this point in the summer, I remember many a 4th celebration spent around the pool and with a never-ending crawfish supply. If you’re looking for extra-large crawfish for your 4th festivities, I’d recommend Airline Seafood!
During middle school and high school, many of my 4th celebrations involved lots and lots of cake…birthday cake, that is, as one of my closest friend’s was born on July 4th! Three Brothers Bakery saved the day most years, with delicious red, white and blue…and birthday themed cupcakes and cakes!
What’s more American than hotdogs, cotton candy (see awkward photo below) and Houston’s home team? I still think hanging out with friends or family at a ‘Stros game may be the absolute best way to spend a 4th of July…and lucky you, this year they’re playing at home, once again!
Whether your July 4th is spent with family or friends, by the pool or by the beach, I hope you will keep in mind that this is the perfect time to take a hint from IPR’s Ahna and thank a veteran.
