Working in a creative industry means that our right brains are put into over-drive at times. Creativity can be a tricky thing, coming in random bursts and sometimes at inconvenient times. However, there are ways to fully utilize those moments and create an environment for even more of them to occur. Check out some of the tips we use around the office to enhance and capture our creativity.
Slow Down
This tip can be tricky because let’s face it, we live in a fast-paced world that is always pushing us to go, go, go. But, when you’re thinking about your next task, before you’ve even completed the one you’re current working on, your mind doesn’t have time to get those creative juices flowing. Try taking a step back. Allow yourself to relax and process the world around you. This will tidy up your mind and leave room for those creative ideas to start flowing in.
Take Notes
It is no secret that moments of creativity come when we least expect them (in the shower, during our workouts, while we are cooking dinner, etc.), so make sure you always keep a pen and paper handy. Writing down your creative thoughts and ideas in the moment will make sure you remember them later. If you don’t have paper around, you can always use the notes feature on your phone.
Surround Yourself with Inspirational Opportunities
The environments that best produce creativity vary from person to person, so it is important to try out new things until you find what works for you. Some things that work for us here in the office are spending time outside, working with our hands (e.g. playing with silly putty or play-doh during brainstorms), exercising and listening to music.
Journal
Although we think carrying around a pocket-sized journal is great way to capture random thoughts of inspiration, taking the time to journal and write things by hand is a great way to reflect and produce even more new ideas. Challenge yourself to journal consistently for one month and see how your productivity improves.
Adopt a “Yes, and…” Attitude
This mindset is big here in our office. Negativity can kill creative ideas, so we always try to follow up new ideas and comments by saying “Yes, and…”. This helps us expand the creativity that is already present and leads to even more original and exciting ideas.
Those are some of our tips for fostering creativity in our office. What methods work for you? Let us know in the comments.
